Someone sawed off part of a statue in Paramount that serves as a solemn tribute to military veterans in a crime that marked a painful loss for the community ahead of Memorial Day.

Some pieces of the Battlefield Cross and Soldier at the Paramount Armed Forces Memorial at the Civic Center were sawed off and stolen. The crime, which caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage, was discovered by the city's mayor this week.
